The Herald-Times
Overview
The Herald-Times is the largest circulation daily newspaper in Bloomington. It is one of two daily newspapers in the city, along with the Indiana Daily Student. It has a daily circulation of about 28,000 and a Sunday circulation of more than 43,000.
The newspaper is the current incarnation of a business started in 1877, the Bloomington Telephone, named for the new invention. In 1943, the Telephone merged with the Evening World to become the Bloomington World-Telephone. Another paper, the Bloomington Daily Herald, was started in 1947 and three years later those papers merged into the Daily Herald-Telephone. The word Daily was dropped in 1977 and the name changed to the Herald-Times in 1989.
Online Presence
The Herald-Times originally had a free website where Bloomington residents could view daily news and search the online archive. In 2003, it transitioned to a subscription-based website that contains the same content.
It originally had an online forum, Hoosier Talk, that was quite popular in the late 1990s, but closed it down in 2003. Some people believe the site was shut down over concerns over the paper's legal liability when the online debate over the Scott Wells case became too heated. Many of the frequent posters migrated over to the Association of Monroe County Taxpayers and Bloomington Alternative Discussion Board where debate over many issues continues.
On August 20th, 2007, The Herald-Times launched a new Bloomington city directory/search engine called finditbtown.com.
