African American fraternity originally founded as Kappa Alpha Nu in Bloomington in 1911. The name was changed in 1915. A short-lived fraternity named Alpha Kappa Nu founded in 1903 was the inspiration for the original name.

Kappa Alpha Psi is the only Alpha chapter of all the Greek letter organizations on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. It was founded in a rooming house run by Mary 'Molly' Spaulding at 425 E. Kirkwood Avenue.
