From Bloomingpedia
In 1854 A. B. and J. C. Carlton founded the Bloomington News Letter as a Democratic publication. Howard Coe bought this paper in 1856 and re-established it as the Bloomington Republican, borrowing the name from an earlier failed newspaper.
