Burton Woolery

Sergeant Burton Woolery was the first soldier from Monroe County to be killed in combat in World War I. He was struck by a German shell in Esperance Ferme in France on July 29, 1918. Two other Bloomingtonians, Fred Stuart and Warren Dillman, were also injured by the shell.
A graduate of Bloomington High School, Woolery was a freshman at Indiana University when war broke out. He immediately enlisted and served with Battery F of 150th Field Artillery, 42nd Rainbow Division.
His remains were returned to the United States in 1921 and interred in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The Bloomington post of the American Legion is named in his honor.
