Carlisle Briscoe

Carlisle Briscoe, Jr. (1942? - July 16, 2013) was a member of the Ku Klux Klan who firebombed the Black Market in 1968.

Briscoe, who worked as an auto mechanic, was also suspected of being "The Inspector", an arsonist who set several fires, including Judge Nat U. Hill's barn on Kinser Pike. He was also known for his involvement in a United States Supreme Court case, where he argued that he should be allowed to sue trial witnesses for libel after their statements.

After the firebombing, some Klansmen were also arrested in Ellettsville with dynamite. They had reportedly planned to bomb several bridges on old SR 37.

Briscoe's daughter also served prison time, for the shooting death of Don Briscoe, Carlisle Briscoe's brother, in 1984.

Carlisle Briscoe died in the Nebraska State Penitentiary, where he had been sent for possession of a firearm.
