Duck Inn
The Duck Inn was a restaurant and dance hall from the 1920's to the 1940's. It was located about five miles southwest of Bloomington.
The inn was built by Clive Heltonburg shortly after the nearby Dixie Highway was paved. It consisted of a one-story stone building, a garage, and seven cottages used as rooms.
A dance hall was added in the 1930's, and the inn became a popular Saturday night location. recorded music. For years, many considered it the Saturday-night place to be. Music was provided by a juke box or by jazz musician Clondike Tucker.
The inn also had a reputation for being a spot where one could find bootleg liquor and prostitutes.
After Heltonburg's death in 1931, his wifre ran the inn for a few years before selling it to Jes Ferguson.
In 1941 the inn burned to the ground. After rebuilding, Ferguson renamed the inn the Beech Grove, although it was still commonly known as the Duck Inn.
