Garden Hill
The Garden Hill neighhborhood is the area bounded by 13th Street, 17th Street, Walnut Street and Indiana Avenue. The area now contains the Brownstone and Terra Trace apartment complexes and is convenient to Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall across the street.
Early in the 20th century, the area was known as Cherry Hill because of the many wild cherry trees that grew in the woods. There was a sawmill on 14th Street and mostly woods north of 17th. The Cherry Hill Park was a baseball park, possibly just north of the railroad tracks near Indiana, and the Cherry Hill Christian Center was on 16th Street and Dunn Street until 2008.
In the 60's, more students began to move in, and Indiana University briefly considered taking over the area as part of the campus. Today, the area consists of 95% student rentals, although the neighborhood association is attempting to get more homeowners back into the neighborhood.
