Home Laundry Building
The New Home Laundry Company built the brick building at 309 S. Lincoln Street in 1922 and a one-story addition at 300 E. Third Street in 1948. The laundry company was a pick-up and return company which did laundry for residents wealthy enough to afford the service.
For some years after that, Barbara Leonard operated Leonard's Linen Service at the location. Eventually, hoping to sell the building, she went to the trouble of having it added to the National Register of Historic Places to make it eligible for tax credits and more desirable for buyers. The designation was approved, but no buyers were forthcoming, so in 2005 she applied for a permit to demolish the building. Ironically, the permit was denied by the city due to the building's new historical designation. Leonard filed a lawsuit, and the debate caused some furor in local council meetings; but two years later N&N Enterprises LLC purchased the building with the intent of creating upscale apartments and retail space while keeping the original facade intact.
In 2008 Rachaels Cafe opened in the building.
The architect is not known.
