Hylant Group
The Hylant Group is the 38th-largest insurance agent/broker in the United States and the largest privately owned independent insurance company in Indiana. In 2002 they bought the former Conseco Risk Management, taking over their offices in Bloomington and Indianapolis. Conseco had been the owner of Wells & Co. which in turn was the owner of Joe Dial Insurance, a long-time Bloomington based firm.
At that time their offices were in the Uptown Plaza. The next year they moved to a former Teletron building, saying Downtown Parking was too difficult, but in 2008 they returned to Downtown in the Chase building.
For several years they were the city's insurance provider, and in 2009 they were named the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce’s Large Business of the Year. But then it was revealed that a Hylant vice-president had sent an insensitive and racially charged e-mail on his company account, and the city chose to cut ties with them in the year 2010. The vice-president later resigned.
