Morton C. Hunter

Morton C. Hunter (ca. 1830 - October 25, 1896 was a Civil War general and owner of the Hunter Stone Quarry.

Born in Versailles, Hunter graduated from Indiana University School of Law in 1849. He practiced law in Bloomington until 1858, when he became the Monroe County representative in the State House. He built and lived in the Hunter House, on land he bought from his father-in-law.

In 1862, as war brewed, he organized the 82nd Indiana Infantry. His bravery and tactical ability at the Battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge won him the command of a brigade, and he marched to the sea with General Sherman.

Returning to Bloomington after the war, he was elected to Congress several times between 1867 and 1879, and ran the quarry that bore his name.

On September 26, 1848, Hunter married the former Martha Labertew, daughter of Asher Labertew, and they had eight children: Mary, Morton Jr., George, John, Joseph, Frank, Samuel, and Minnie.

Hunter is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.
