Mount Tabor
Mount Tabor is a tiny community in the far northwestern part of Monroe County. Only a few residents live there today, but before the advent of the railroads the town's location high on the Bean Blossom Creek made it an ideal place to boat goods down to New Orleans. As many as 350 people lived in the community then. Residents would build rafts of poplar wood and lash them to trees along the banks of the Bean Blossom. When the spring floods came, the boats, each with about a dozen sailors, would be floated down the creek into the White River, and on down to the Ohio and Louisiana. The sailors would generally book passage on a steamboat to New Albany and return with wagonloads of goods from their journey. As many as 15 flatboats might leave the town in a single year.
