Smithville Telephone
Smithville Telephone is a local phone company that provides local and long distance phone service, broadband internet, and digital technologies such as consumer video, data management and security services. As of 2013, it intended to start a local television network, with broadcasts such as Edgewood High School football games.
Based in Ellettsville, Smithville employs more than 140 people. It laid more than 2,500 miles of fiberoptic cable in the years 2009-2013.
On September 10, 2013, the company announced that it would be cutting 45 positions. It blamed a decline in landline business and a drop in federal subsidies for the layoffs.
Originally named the Monroe County Telephone Company, Smithville serves customers from Indianapolis to Evansville.
