South Dunn Street

South Dunn Street is the name of an urban in-fill project on South Dunn Street, between Grimes Lane and Hillside Drive. It was begun in the winter of 2005 after receiving approval from the Bloomington City Council and an endorsement from the Bryan Park Neighborhood Association. The development philosophy is along the lines of the New Urbanist movement with narrow streets, rear-ally access to garages, and narrow lots with a uniform line of houses along the sidewalks. Houses are craftsman-style bungalow and four square designs.
The development also includes mixed-use commercial and residential structures at the southern end of the street, along Hillside. The first building, on the eastern end, went up in the summer/fall of 2007. The buildings contain commercial property for lease on the lower level with apartments on the upper level. The project aims to attract businesses that can provide services to nearby residences (such as a grocery store, coffee house, or video store).
The developer is Matt Press. This is his first development project. Kirkwood Design Studio drew up the house plans and provides continued architectural advice for any customizations. The current building contractor is G & S Homes.
