Steve Tesich
Steve Tesich (September 29, 1942 - July 1, 1996) was an Serbian Oscar-winning screenwriter, playwright and novelist. He was born in was born in Užice, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), but immigrated to the USA with his family when he was 14 years old. They settled in East Chicago, Indiana, and Tesich later graduated from Indiana University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was also an alternate rider for his team in the Little 500 in 1962, in which his team won the race. He later studied at Columbia University, were he started writing screenplays. He died of a heart attack at age 53 while living in Canada.
He is best known as the writer for the movie Breaking Away based on the Little 500 at Indiana University. He won an Oscar in 1980 for best screenplay for this film.
