Talk:JCPenney
Back in the mid-seventies, Penny's had a big LP record section, that my college roomate claimed had the lowest prices. So I frequented it with him quite a lot and for years after- when records were still 33 rpm vinyl things- remember? I got a good many classic rock albums there. They had a lot of posters and other record store items- as well as the usual housewares and stuff-
When I was young they were similar to Sears, but grew less "hardware" and more clothuing oriented through the years- They had a great electronics section named "Electric Avenue" that they dropped nationally in the early nineties.
The store at College Mall was located where Dick's sporting goods is now. Target was then across the parking lot where a new steakhouse is being built. The present Target location was added onto the mall sometime in the eighties I think. JC Penny may have been in that part then- I don't know I wasn't around then.
- Thanks for sharing! I've been here since '96. I don't remember Penney's ever being where the Dick's is now. It was always Lazarus (or Ayres, I can never keep those two straight). Penney's went out in the early 00's to make way for the new Target location. I don't know how long Target was in that old front spot where the new Longhorn Steakhouse is, but it definitely didn't move to it's current location in the 80s. -Chrobb 00:08, 23 May 2006 (EDT)
- "Electric Avenue" was Montgomery Ward - I used to work there in the 80s. They also tried to do standalone stores for this and Gem and Jewels (Gold and Jewels? Gem-N-Jewels?). There were a couple of these in Indy. JCPenney was also big for their catalog, which I remember as a kid. Even if the stores didn't have all of the toys or hardware, they had it all in the catalog. --Jkonrath 10:28, 23 May 2006 (EDT)
location
Chrobb has it right, Penney's is where the new Target is located. Dick's (idiotic name for a store, BTW) is located in the section of College Mall where the old MCL Cafeteria, Lazarus, and movie theatres were; that's the southwest corner of the mall proper. There were several other stores and a sandwich shop in that section before is was razed to accommodate the Dick's. The old Target location was just across the parking lot off of the southwest corner. old location?
This page (http://freepages.school-alumni.rootsweb.com/~mjolson/Town.htm) has an aerial picture from the 1930s of downtown, and seems to indicate that there may have been a JCPenney on the west side of the downtown square, along with a Kresges. I'll keep digging before I add anything... --Jkonrath 12:21, 23 June 2006 (EDT)
Two competing articles
Too lazy to fix this today, but there are two articles, JCPenney and J.C. Penney. Not sure which one wins. I think the current trade name is JCPenney, but it was originally incorporated as J.C. Penney? --Jkonrath (talk) 18:33, 10 April 2020 (EDT)
