Unified Development Ordinance
The Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) is a law attempting to simplify the guidelines for new development in Bloomington. The document, which runs around 180 pages, provides for four different types of subdivisions, modifies the definition of various zoning categories, and unifies two previous ordinances.
On June 19, 2006 the Bloomington Plan Commission met for the first time to discuss the ordinance. They accepted input at various public meetings to update the document to its current form, and the Bloomington City Council approved it in December. The ordinance became live on February 12, 2007.
The ordinance provides for a new zoning district (Commercial Downtown), expands bicycle and public transit support requirements, provides incentives for affordable housing, and puts a limit on the number of parking spaces developers can create.
