Viola Taliaferro
The Honorable Viola J. Taliaferro is a retired Monroe county circuit-court judge and community leader in Bloomington. She was Monroe County's first African-American judge, and served with great distinction in the area of juvenile justice.
Additionally, Taliaferro served in an advisory role to former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and as a member of the National Research Council on Juvenile Crime. Among numerous other awards, Judge Taliaferro was named Judge of the Year by the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association.
Her husband George Taliaferro is a former professional football player, and was the first African-American drafted by a National Football League team.
