John (McCullough) Seward dies in an accident at the Perry Brothers Quarry, half a mile north of Ellettsville. He was 66 years old.
August
A fire destroys much of Ellettsville's business section. It started in the Shook and Faulkner Wagon Factory and that building along with eight others are burned to ashes: W.H.H. Jackson's store and residence, the Perry Brothers store, W.T. Harris' store, J. A. May's barber shop, Doctor R.C. Harris' drug store, Doctor James M. Harris' residence, and the Odd Fellows building.
