Joseph Swain
Joseph Swain (June 16, 1857 - May 19, 1927) was the 9th President of Indiana University. He was an alumnus of Indiana University, completing a bachelor's degree in 1883 and a master's degree in 1885. He began teaching math and biology at IU in 1886, until leaving in 1891 to follow David Starr Jordan to Stanford. He was offered the Presidency of Indiana University in 1893, and served until 1902, when he left to serve as President of Swarthmore College. He retired in 1921.
Swain Hall is named after him.
Swain engaged Indianapolis architect Louis H. Gibson to design a house for him. The house stood at 631 E. Third Street. Construction was supervised by local architect John Nichols. When Gibson left IU to become president of Swarthemore College the house was sold to Phi Gamma Delta. A hand colored postcard showing this house from its days as the FIJI house can be seen at Flickr.
