Amzi Atwater
The Reverend Amzi Atwater (November 9, 1839 - March 12, 1919) was vice-president of Indiana University and a Latin and Greek professor, as well as a minister.
A Civil War veteran, Atwater came to Bloomington in 1865 to become pastor of the First Christian Church. He simultaneously attended classes and received a degree in 1866. He left Bloomington to become a professor at Hiram College in Ohio, but returned in 1870 with a new bride.
He was secretary of the I. U. faculty for fifteen years and was named vice-president in 1888, a position he held for four years.
He was married on August 8, 1870, to the former Cortena Munson, and they had two children, one named Munson Atwater.
