Bloomington Symphony Orchestra
From Bloomingpedia
The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra
- Founded by Indiana University students Geoffrey Simon and Tamas Ungar in 1969, the BSO has been Bloomington’s official community orchestra since 1984. Now in its 42nd Season (Life the Universe and EverythingItalic text), the Orchestra is thriving under the leadership of Maestro Charles Latshaw.
- The Orchestra features many professional musicians who volunteer their services, but it is also proud of the many accomplished players who do other things for a living -- an important feature of a true community orchestra.
- BSO players host “Meet the Instruments,” demonstrating their equipment for young people, while the BSO’s Children's Instrument Recovery Program (CHIRP) refurbishes used musical instruments and lends them to kids who otherwise couldn’t afford them.
- In addition to its annual BSO Youth Concerto Competition, the Orchestra offers a free concert in Bryan Park every summer. Sponsored by the Smithville Telephone and City of Bloomington’s Parks and Recreation Department, it is attended by hundreds of people and is a special favorite of families.
