Margaret Hemphill McCalla

Margaret Hemphill McCalla (b. 1836, d. 1912) was an early teacher in Bloomington and Indiana's first female superintendent.

She began her teaching career at Bloomington High School having charge of the mathematics department.

In 1875, Superintendent J. M. Wilson went to Terre Haute, and McCalla was elected in his place. She served as superintendent for the was elected to fill his place. She served as superintendent for most of the next 14 years, and McCalla School at 10th Street and Indiana Avenue is named for her.

She is a 1983 inductee into the Monroe County Hall of Fame on which her plaque reads "Education pioneer, taught 21 years in one-room county & Bloomington city schools. Helped organize city's first high school, elected Bloomington and Indiana's first female superintendent (1874-1891)."
