Nat U. Hill, Sr.

Nat U. Hill, Sr. (b. 1851, d. 1908) was president of the First National Bank in Bloomington, as well as Indiana State Treasurer, an Indiana University trustee, and county chairman of the Republican Party.

He was born in Clay County, June 21, 1852, the fourth son of Abel S. and Almira (Usher) Hill, and was reared in Brazil. He attended Indiana University and eventually received master's and law degrees there. After a stint as a Brazil lawyer and hardware store employee, he returned to Bloomington and was elected a director in the First National Bank. He was also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, the Masons and the Elks.

An active supporter of the University, Hill was instrumental in getting a $50,000 donation from the county to rebuild the principal building at Seminary Square after an 1883 fire. He was elected as trustee from 1898-1904.

He is a charter member of the Monroe County Hall of Fame on which his plaque reads "Lawyer, 1876-1908; First National Bank, President, Director; Indiana State Treasurer, 1902-1906; Republican Party Leader; Early Financial Benefactor of Indiana University."

Hill married Miss Anna M. Buskirk, daughter of George A. Buskirk, in 1879 and they had two sons, Nat U. Hill, Jr. and Phillip K. Hill.
