Perhaps the premiere girl’s basketball program in Bloomington, for decades the Bloomington High School North program was hidden by the outstanding shine of the boy’s basketball program, and for good reason: The girl’s program had not had a winning season in decades. With hiring of new staff in 2007 and a swing of talent, North has become the place to play girl’s basketball.

NCAA Division I Players

According to Gary Donna of Hoosier Basketball Magazine, through 2006 the program had sent three players to Division 1 ranked schools on basketball scholarship: Whitney Thomas, class of 2005 (Indiana University), Kiley Jarrett, class of 2005 (Ball State University) and Lori Whitaker, class of 2006 (University of Coastal Carolina). Along with sending players to college, North has also had numerous Junior and Senior Indiana High School All-Stars.

Coaching and Tournament Competition

With the current coach and environment at North, head coach Steve Goddard has gone 87-28 in his 6 years at North. “These kids have been in all types situations and they know how to win”; said head coach Goddard, commenting on how he expected a great upcoming season.

North competes in Class 4A basketball, the highest class of Indiana girl's basketball. The school is a member of Conference Indiana, one of the most competitive conferences in the state. North is also in Secional 14, one of the toughest sectionals in the state. The program has won numerous Conference Indiana titles, Sectional Championships, Regional Championships and a Semi-State preview.

Remarks about Cougars Girls Basketball

“Girls basketball at Bloomington North has been the most dominating sport the past couple of years after being in the boy’s basketball shadow for quite some time,” said Nick Van Forester of the Herald Times. Gary Donna comments that “after years of non-existence North Cougars are making a name for themselves.” Without a doubt, Bloomington North is the place to play if you’re interested in being involved in a fantastic program that’s always looking for new talent when it comes to girl basketball players.
