Rachel Peden
Rachel Peden (b. 1901, d. 1975) was a popular environmentalist, newspaper columnist, and author.
Born Rachel Mason in Monroe Conty, Peden graduated from Indiana University in 1923. She married Richard Peden and they moved to Johnson County, where she wrote a a column for the Muncie Star called “The Almanac of Poor Richard’s Wife.”.
She continued writing about her rural life in three books: "Rural Free", "The Land, The People", and "Speak to the Earth".
In 1952, the Pedens opened their farm for school field trips, and it grew into the Children's Farm Festival at the Peden Family Farm, which continues today.
Rachel is a charter member of the Monroe County Hall of Fame on which her plaque reads "Popular newspaper columnist, "Hoosier Farm Wife Says," novelist on rural life; Delta Zeta "Woman of the Year" winner; Philanthropic organization leader."
