Hoosier Hills Bloomington Community Book Fair
The Hoosier Hills Bloomington Community Book Fair is an annual fundraiser held for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank and it many member agencies. As many as 100,000 used and collectible books, CDs, videos, DVDs, cassettes, records, games, puzzles, maps, sheet music, and other items are on sale. The fair is held in October at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.
Donations are accepted throughout the year for the fair. Prices on the books drop steadily throughout the fair, culminating in a free book day, although donations are always accepted. Typically, the fair opens on Thursday and there is a $10 admission the first day. On Friday and Saturday, admission is free, and on Sunday books are sold for half price. On Monday, a grocery bag full of books costs $10.
The first fair was held in 1983 by the American Red Cross as a fundraiser. In 2014, the Red Cross decided to shift its focus and selected Hoosier Hills to take over the operation of the fair. The first year under Hoosier Hills was in 2015 and they have carried on the tradition to the present.
In 2020, the fair was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was back on for 2021.
