Dick was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. His parents moved to Indianapolis when he was young. Barbara somewhat jokingly said that they quickly moved out of Indianapolis after they caught little Richard riding his tricycle in traffic on Meridian Street. They moved to Plainfield, IN and then later down closer to Bloomington.

He was known throughout his life for his love of fishing. From the age of a toddler up until his death, he was always involved in fishing.

Dick graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and afterwards joined the Navy where he was a radioman during the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he went to Hanover College in southern Indiana on his GI bill. There he met Barbara.

After college, Dick sold insurance for a while, then they moved up to Lake Monroe and opened The Fishin' Shedd. Barbara says that he worked long hours on the business. Often as much as 18 hours a day for 6 or 7 days a week.

In 1996 became ill and ended up on dialysis. He continued to go fishing often and would travel to Lake Erie and South Carolina for fishing trips.

He died on April 16th, 2000 of his illness he contracted 4 years earlier.
