Sanford F. Teter
Sanford F. Teter (May 25, 1871 - February 20, 1928 was a city councilman at the beginning of the 20th century. He was the son of Newton Teter and Susan E. Adkins.
Teter was born in Noblesville. He graduated from Indiana University in 1893, where he was the captain of the football team. He worked at the Showers Brothers Factory afterwards, eventually becoming Secretary-Treasurer and director of the sales department. He was the first president of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, and was a prominent member and officer of the First Methodist Church. He was instrumental in the development of the Dixie Highway from Bloomington to Martinsville. It replaced a circuitous route through Ellettsville.
Teter was known for his skills as a public speaker. Something of a visionary, he gave a speech in 1903 recommending many civic improvements, including a second railway line, a new courthouse, brick-paved streets, improved sewage system, a city hall and railway stations.
He married the former Nellie Showers and they had two children: Mary Louise Carter and William S. Teter.
In the last 13 years of he life he suffered from two strokes and a kidney ailment, and he died at age 56.
