Smithville Post Office
The Smithville Post Office is one of Monroe County's nine post offices. Located at 7300 Strain Ridge Road, it lies at the heart of the small town of Smithville in Clear Creek Township, south of Bloomington. Erected in 1974, this concrete block building offers window service and post office boxes, but no mail delivery; local residents with roadside mailboxes have Bloomington addresses. Besides postal service, the post office is used for community gathering purposes — the bookmobile operated by the Monroe County Public Library stops at the post office when passing through Smithville. In 1989, the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory named much of Smithville a historic district; the post office was included in the district's boundaries, but its recent construction meant that it was not counted among the district's buildings.
