Stephen Lee Canner
Stephen Lee Canner first moved to Bloomington in September 1981 to study Linguistics at Indiana University. After a brief stint in Indianapolis he moved back to Bloomington in February 1984 and lived in the city until October 1989.
In September 1983 he formed the post punk band Your Real Dad with Dave d'Eath, Nathan Sturm, and James Daywalt Williams, commuting to Bloomington for practice and shows until he moved back to town. The band fizzled out shortly after Canner's return to Bloomington.
In the mid-1980s he co-hosted a radio program on WQAX with Seth Malice. Canner's persona on the show was that of an old bluesman known as "Your Very Own Papa Honeyman Edwards".
In 1985 he co-founded the glam band Too Cool, which had members based in both Indianapolis and Bloomington. The band drew its inspiration from groups like the New York Dolls, the Stooges, MC5, as well as 1960s garage rock. Previous Your Real Dad members Nathan Sturm and Dave d'Eath were members of Too Cool at various times during its history. Seth Malice briefly practiced with the band as bassist but never performed live with them. Canner quit the band in early 1988.
Stephen Lee Canner now lives in Austin, Texas, where he still performs music. His current band is The Victor Mourning.
