Overview

Names for Willie Ethel Streeter and dedicated in 1984, the Willie Streeter Community Gardens have offered a variety of gardening opportunities to those who lack the space to garden at home or who like to garden in the company of others. Located in Winslow Woods Park on S. Highland Avenue near the YMCA, the gardens offer conventional and organic plots as well as accessible raised beds. Services provided include the initial tilling of the 10' x 20' plots, sources of water, toilets, maintained paths, composting, soil testing, deer fencing, access to adaptive tools, and the advice of the Garden Supervisor (if requested). There are 45 conventional plots, 43 organic plots, and 10 raised beds (4' x 8' x 2'4"). A limited number of plots and all of the raised beds allow the overwintering of crops. For more information, call 349-3700. All ages are welcome.

Plots are available April 1 - October 31.

Programs

Plant a Row for the Hungry

To address local issues of community food security, Bloomington Parks and Recreation joins with Bloomingfoods, Hilltop Garden and Nature Center, the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Worm's Way, and Mother Hubbard's Cupboard in encouraging gardeners to plant an extra row for a hungry family. The Food Bank distributes the donations. In 2004, the project raised over 8,000 lbs. of fresh produce. For information on how to participate, call 349-3737.
