Carlisle Industrial Brake & Friction

Carlisle Industrial Brake & Friction is a division of Carlisle Companies of Syracuse, NY. It is located in the former Sarkes Tarzian television tuner plant off Hillside Drive in Bloomington. The local plant sits on 21 acres and has 250,000 square feet of space.

The company designs and makes brakes for off-highway construction vehicles and heavy-duty trucks, and smaller brakes for boat trailers. The brakes are in use on mining equipment which is some of the largest in the world, as well as certain off-highway earth-moving equipment made by Caterpillar.

Carlisle has a market capitalization of over a billion dollars, and is in the Fortune 1000. The company bought the Bloomington plant from B.F. Goodrich in 1990. In 2005, Carlisle bought the off-highway brake assets of ArvinMeritor Inc. of South Carolina and moved roughly 50 jobs to Bloomington, but were forced to lay off almost as many during the economic downturn of 2009.
