Science Café

What is Science Café?

Science Café is science outreach – scientists speak on subjects of general interest to an audience of non-scientists in a public setting.

Science Café is held biweekly at the Rachael’s Café, (near the intersection of 3rd and Lincoln (http://rachaelscafe.com/)).

The topics are broad and of general interest, therefore this public forum is a chance to promote science literacy and a rare opportunity to meet and interact with scientists in a relaxed and friendly setting. Ample time is set aside for (often lively) Q&A sessions.

History

The Bloomington Science Café is one of the well over a hundred Science Cafés in the US and abroad, started initially in the United Kingdom as “Café Scientifique” as a form of outreach to promote science literacy. Settings and formats vary but the goal is to provide a venue for the public and scientists to interact in a relaxed setting. Science Café Bloomington was initially established in September 2006 by the IU University Graduate School Communications Director Erika Biga Lee.

The Science Café is recognized by the Bloomington Mayor's Office as an official community event.
