Sophia Travis
Sophia Travis (October 4, 1965 - September 19, 2012) was a Monroe County Council member and musician.
Born to a Korean mother and a Finnish father, Travis came to Bloomington in 1984 to study East Asian Studies at Indiana University. She was elected to the Monroe County Council in 2004 and served until 2008, serving as County Council President in 2006. In 2008, she ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic Primary for County Commissioner against Iris Kiesling. In 2012 she won the Democratic Party primary for County Council, again.
She wrote articles for The Bloomington Alternative and served on many boards and commissions, including the Monroe County Redevelopment Commission, the Monroe County Parks and Recreation Board, the Bloomington Commission on Aging, the board of Options now LifeDesigns, the Monroe County Commission on the Status of Women, and as president of the Indiana University Asian Alumni Association.
She was also well known for playing the accordion and performing in her bands, Lola, Mitten, Hoosier Squeeze, and her own solo efforts, including the CD Releases Music for Swimming and Music for Picnics.
She married Greg Travis in 1997 and they had one child, Finnegan William Travis, b. 2008. They lived in the historic Ketcham House with four cats and a dog, where Greg and Finnegan continue to live.
Travis died suddenly in 2012 of an undiagnosed heart condition.
