Bobby Helms
Bobby Helms (b. Robert Lee Helms, August 15, 1933 - June 19, 1997 in Bloomington) was a country singer who was best known for releasing the popular Christmas song "Jingle Bell Rock" in 1957. He grew up in Bloomington, moved to Nashville, Tennesee and then to Martinsville, Indiana where he died in 1997 and was buried there in Hillsdale Cemetery.
He had his first TV show, Hayloft Frolic, on WTTV, Channel 4 in Indianapolis for almost 5 years. Its worth noting that at the time, WTTV was a station owned by Sarkes Tarzian out of Bloomington. So there may have been some connection.
On December 23rd, 1957, Bobby first released the song "Jingle Bell Rock", which was written by Joe Beal & Jim Boothe. It has remained a popular song still played to this day and is part of repetroire of classic Christmas songs. Helms' recording charted for six weeks and peaked at #6 on the Billboard charts.
